The current state of Australian laparoscopic surgical skills training.

The Simulated Surgical Skills Program (SSSP) is a current project run by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). In 2008, the SSSP conducted a review of the range and content of laparo-scopic training courses available in Australia. This review was presented to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing; a discussion of its findings is presented below. In 2008, two researchers began investigating the types of laparo-scopic surgical training courses being offered in each Australian state and territory. Researchers initially looked for a national- or state-level register of laparoscopic training courses; however, none could be located. Consequently, universities, regional branches of RACS, private training organizations and medical industry companies were contacted over a period of 6 months. Information on laparoscopic training courses was gathered. In most instances, information was dictated to researchers over the phone; rarely was the training organization willing or able to provide hard copy information such as brochures, training booklets, etc.
