I disagree with the conclusions drawn by Dr Berney in his article 'Is 'informed consent' a deceptive notion with negligible protection value for doctors?' Informed consent is a clinically useful and practical method to assist in patient management. The consent process assists with communication by providing a framework for doctors to communicate both the serious and the common risks of surgery. The act of a patient formally acknowledging risk by signature, while maybe not perfect in terms of legal protection to the doctor, does compel the patient to make due consideration as to the merits of the procedure.
