One of topics of these 10 years' progress in the large-capacity direct current technology is the development of Kii-Channel high-voltage direct current (HVDC) System, where part of the output from the Tachibana-Bay Thermal Power Plant (1050 MW ×2) of Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. is transmitted to Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. grids. The system capacity is bipolar 1400 MW (±250 kV —2 800 A), which is of the world's largest class in direct current transmission facilities including cable sections. When the connection is reinforced in the future, it will have thyristor valves connected in series to provide operating voltage of 500 kV, thereby doubling the system capacity. The main circuit has a bipolar single-circuit and metallic-conductor-return configuration, providing polar independent configuration which prevents one polar shutdown from affecting the other pole (Fig. 1).
