A two-month stalemate in China’s tungsten market came to an end in late June, with prices rising rapidly in the last week of the month and into the first weeks of July, driven by a shortage of concentrate feedstock supplies. The tighter concentrate feedstock availability was the result of enhanced supervision of mining activity ahead of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese communist party, which prompted sellers to withhold material from sales and lift their offers. Higher monthly bids and offers issued by key consumers have further shored up market confidence and bolstered spot prices.
