Good progress at Mt Tom Price for EMC haul trucks

With cost control the number one item on the agendas of BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and the world's other Tier One miners, emerging markets' procurement of haul trucks and other expensive mining gear is assuming greater importance. RIO TINTO is trialling four haul trucks manufactured by Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing Corporation (XEMC) at Mt Tom Price mine in the Pilbara. The trucks, customised to Rio's requirements, arrived in mid-2012 for a three year trial, although the planning dates back to November 2010 when an MOU between Rio and XEMC was first signed. Discussions on design aspects, support and supply chain logistics followed before a contract was signed in May 2011.
