Shipping is under considerable pressure to reduce its environmental footprint. There are tangible goals for the sector to reduce its emissions by 2030, creating a market for innovators to come up with solutions to meet them. With regard to sulphur emissions, operators have a number of choices open to them, from technical options such as scrubbers to the use of alternative fuels such as distillates or LNG, which have inherently lower sulphurcontent. While LNG has long been touted as the natural successor to Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), it has fallen at the hurdle of cost - both for building up bunkering infrastructure as well as the capital investment required from owners to either acquire newbuilds or retrofit existing ships.
