Microchip shortage hits Turkish auto output, could continue until H2

Following two major Turkish automotive producers’ (Tofas and Oyak Renault’s) temporary production stoppage decisions in mid-March, due to the global shortage of microchips, another major Turkish automotive producer, Ford Otosan, also decided to pause output as of April 3. The year-old global COVID-19 pandemic boosted demand for microchips causing problems in the supply chain for in-vehicle electronic components, which have been used more intensely in the automotive sector in recent years, Ford Otosan said March 29. The company noted its main partner, Ford Motor Co., works with global suppliers to ensure the efficient use of materials in electronic components by giving priority to the solution of the problem and main production lines.
