Host plant genotype has long been recognized as an important factor influencing the outcome of plant-herbivore and above-belowground interactions. Host plant genotype determines plant growth rate, constitutive secondary chemistry, and range of phenotypic plasticity. However, the influence of herbivore genotype has largely been overlooked in these two way interactions despite our wide knowledge of the intra-specific variation in herbivore genetic background, phenotype and endosymbiont community. As aconsequence, the interactive roles of both host plant and herbivore genotype have largely been ignored in above-belowground interactions.
