Eni has made a “major” oil and gas discovery offshore Ivory Coast after drilling its first exploration well in the West African nation. The Italian firm is now aiming to start studies for the fast-track development of the discovery, however market observers suggest it is unlikely that the associated gas will get to market anytime soon. The Italian major announced the Baleine discovery, located in block CI-101, on Wednesday. The discovery potentially holds an estimated 1.5-2 billion barrels of oil and 1.8-2.4 Tcf of associated gas, according to Eni.
