Northeast Asian LNG imports rose slightly in 2020, as strong cold-season demand offset Covid- 19 downside that was particularly acute in the first half of the year. China continues to drive the region’s LNG growth, as demand from other major importers Japan and South Korea falter. Northeast Asia is the world’s largest LNG market, taking over 55% of global imports in 2019, according to Paris-based importers’ group GIIGNL.
