Economic Evaluation of Organic Farming in Rice Based Cropping System

A field experiment was conducted during the kharif and rabi seasons of 2000 and 2001 to study the economics of different N management practices applied to kharif rice and their residual effect on the rabi groundnut. The highest gross returns, net returns and benefit cost (BC) ratio of rice were recorded with application of 100 per cent N through fertilizer. The highest gross returns, net returns and BC ratio of groundnut were recorded with 100 per cent N through farmyard manure (FYM) to preceding rice. However, for the entire cropping system, the gross returns were highest with application of 50 per cent N through FYM and 50 per cent N through fertilizer, while the highest net returns were obtained with 100 per cent N through fertilizer during the first year and 50 per cent N through FYM and 50 per cent N through fertilizer during second year and the BC ratio was maximum with application of 100 per cent N through fertilizer during both the years of study.
