We studied visual outcome and posterior capsular opacification (PCO) following implantation of hydrophilic acrylic and silicone multifocal lenses in 29 eyes who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification. Both the multifocal IOLs provide satisfactory distant and near vision in the majority of the patients, however tripod acrylic hydrophobic IOL has higher rate of PCO, jeopardizing visual performance.INTRODUCTION:The prinjary goal of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is to achieve optimal uncorrected distance and near visual acuity maintaining normal contrast sensitivity. An ideal replacement lens would be one that could provide the accommodative function of a normal crystalline lens. In the absence of natural accommodation, an alternative choice is a multifocal IOL optic with potential benefits of functional vision over a wide range of distances and greater spectacle free vision.
