Bilateral Cataract Extraction With Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Implantation Simultaneous in Pediatric Cataracts

We evaluated the results of simultaneous bilateral cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) inplantation 32 pediatric cataract patients. Simultaneous cataract extraction and posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy and IOL implantation is an effective and safe procedure in bilateral pediatric cataracts treatment. INTRODUCTION:Cataract in childhood is a relatively uncommon occurrence. It is estimated to have a prevalence of 1-15/1000 births and is a significant cause of childhood blindness especially in the developing world (1, 2). Often, the cause of the cataract remains unknown. However, it may also be associated with a strong family history, intrauterine infections (e.g., rubella, Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus, syphilis, toxoplasmosis), developmental or metabolic abnormalities, or with ocular pathology (e.g., persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, anterior segment disorders) (3).
