Described by the European Commission as "one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide", Xylella fastidiosa could have a huge economic impact on horticultural businesses as well as causing significant damage to parks, public gardens and the widerenvironment including woodlands and forestry. Defra warns: "Any outbreak of Xylella in the UK will have a very serious impact on the growers affected by it."Although not currently present in the UK, there is a heightened risk of X. fastidiosa being accidentally introduced from the Continent. Xylella is a notifiable disease, early detection is a priority and sightings should be reported immediately to the plant health authority.
