MANY hundreds of Royal Engineers served in Dhofar in the 1970s, either seconded to the Sultan's Armed Forces (SAF) or in Operation Tenable field squadrons, the SAS or individual detachments, including Survey. The war changed Oman 'from underdeveloped and divided country to vibrant modern nation' as MRAF Lord Stirrup puts it in the foreword to Stewart Wilson's account. Oman was in many respects a medieval country facing tribal rebellion and a full-fledged, communist-backed insurgency.
