Motivating masses to include seasonal fruits and vegetables in their daily diet is the top most strategy in nutrition education as it is evident that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is good for our health. Diets high in fruits and vegetables contribute to antioxidants, which are associated with a reduced cancer and cardiovascular risk, and protection against aging. Thus eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can help to ward off heart disease and stroke, control blood pressure and cholesterol,prevent some types of cancer, and guard against cataract and macular degeneration, two common causes of vision loss. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), approximately 3 million deaths a year occur from such diseases due toinadequate fruit and vegetable intake. While taking into account the widespread micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) deficiencies, especially, in developing countries like India, promoting fruits and vegetables production and consumption can help in improving the nutritional and health status of the population.
