Australia’s energy crisis continues to worsen with no solution in sight. Elections slated for next year mean that no cogent energy policy is likely to emerge in the coming months. Billions of dollars in LNG investments hang in the balance, with politicians struggling to manage the country’s declining gas supply and skyrocketing prices at the same time LNG exports continue to grow. The industry’s lack of investment in new gas fields, coupled with the takeoff in exports from three east coast LNG projects - Gladstone, Queensland Curtis and Australia Pacific - have squeezed the country’s gas supply at the same time the retirement of coal-fired power plants has made Australia’s power grid more dependent on gas (PIW Mar.5’18).
