AUSTRALIA has spearheaded a push for an international inquiry into the causes and handling of the coronavirus pandemic-but a small victory this week could come at the high cost of a hardening of Chinese diplomacy. More than 100 countries joined Australia at the World Health Assembly (WHA) this week to co-sign a motion for an independent probe into the outbreak, believed to have originated in Wuhan. China has defended its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, but also backed the independent investigation at the WHA. China's embassy in Canberra was quick to dismiss Australia's claim of a victory as "nothing but a joke".
