China’s eforts to assume a climate change leadership role will accelerate next month with the launch of a long-delayed national emissions trading scheme (ETS). Beijing identifed an emissions market as one of its top priorities for this year at its annual central economic work conference in December. This was the frst time that emissions cuts had been included in the conference, following President Xi Jinping’s pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The environment ministry is also speeding up eforts to draft a plan for Chinese CO2 emissions to peak by 2030, ecology and environment minister Huang Runqiu says.
