COMPUTERIZATION OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT RDCIS, SAIL

RDCIS, SAIL carry out projects under different category like Plant Performance Improvement (PPI), Product Development (PD), Scientific Investigation & Development (SID), Basic Research (BR) and Technical Services (TS). In addition to this, there are also SDF projects funded by Ministry of Steel and DIT projects funded by Department of Electronics & IT. The procedure for planning, monitoring and controlling of projects in RDCIS is unique in nature. The project coordination group maintains, all project related planning and monitoring details in stand-alone personal computer. Moreover the different documents like project initiation proposal (PIP), project microplan document (PMD), book of milestone (BOM), sanction order (SO), monthly progress report (MPR), project completion report, highlights, CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index), CAB (Certified Annual Benefit) are prepared manually. The technical group maintains all these project related documents in a physical file for audit purpose and are available only with the group. As there is no on-line system to monitor and control the activities of projects & IPR details, the status of projects and IPR details are manually compiled and presented to the management in different meetings. To address the above problems, RDCIS has developed an on-line application named e-PMS, for the computerization of all project related activities of project coordination group. This will result in faster decision making and help in building data bank of all RDCIS projects and IPR details. With online availability of information along with various decision support tools, the system would immensely help RDCIS in proper management of projects and resources.
