Hudbay's 84ktpa Hudson Bay complex will be Canada's largest zinc mine in 2018, supplying 24% of Canada's output. The operation is also an essential part of Hudbay's vertically integrated operations in Manitoba. The Lalor mine, with a mine life extending to 2027, is set to become the sole feed source for Hudbay's 115ktpa Flin Flon smelter in 2021 with the closure of Hudbay's 777 mine, part of the Flin Flon complex, in 2020. Hudbay has ruled out importing significant quantities of concentrate for the smelter. Hudson Bay has high mining costs exceeding US$58/t, due to its labour-intensive cut-and-fill mining method. Despite this, the operation is a first to second quartile cash cost producer because of revenue generated from copper, gold and silver by-products. Additionally, Hudbay Minerals has been actively exploring the possible extension opportunity to gold rich zones.
