A review of the fellow credential, both the application and assessment process

Background: The Dietitians Association Australia (DAA) Fellow credential is underpinned by Competency Standards and is a measure of expert status along the lifelong learning pathway of a dietitian. Aim: To investigate the application and assessment process underpinning the credential and its status as both a credential and an award. Methods: Terms of reference for the project were developed by the Dietetic Credentialing Council (DCC) of DAA. The review followed on from a review of the Competency Standards underpinning the credential. A sample of six stakeholders, both applicants and assessors were interviewed. Standard questions were developed. The interviews were recorded and transcribed from the interviews. Themes were identified and grouped according to the terms of reference. Results: Interviewees found that the application process was too complicated and repetitive. While the credential was seen as an honour, interviewees felt it should be within reach of worthy candidates and that a more supportive mentoring process would assist uptake. The assessment process was sound however more rigour could be applied with a range of case studies provided as well as standardised training of all assessors. An alternative route by nomination was rejected and it was recommended that the credential remain a lifetime achievement. Conclusion: This study found that participants valued the Fellow Credential of DAA as a both a credential and an award. The application process should be simplified, and the assessment process given more rigour. Overall participants valued the Fellow Credential as a recognition of expert status of Australian dietitians.
