Mycosphaerella pinodes (Berk & Bloxam) Vestergren is the most destructive component of the Ascochyta disease complex of peas and has been reported in most areas where peas are grown (2). It can cause reduced rates of emergence, root rots and blight symptoms which are characterised by lesions on stems, leaves and pods. Lesions which girdle and soften the stem base may cause high yield losses. Little is known about the quantitative relationship between disease incidence and yield loss. Knowledge of this relationship could be a basis for decisions on crop protection inputs. Field experiments were established to determine the relationships between yield loss and disease severity and to determine the efficiency of different fungicides as seed treatments.
