Global thermal coal consumption is forecast to continue to form a dominant portion of the electricity generation mix of many developed and emerging economies. AME has revised export thermal coal demand to further decrease 4.8% to 973Mt in 2020 due to coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, export thermal coal demand is forecast to rise 0.9% to 982Mt. The NSW state government recently released the report Strategic Statement on Coal Exploration and Mining In NSW, which optimistically estimates that the total of global seaborne thermal coal demand in 2050 will decrease by only 10% to 900Mtpa, from current level of 1bntpa of thermal coal, although the demand from East Asian areas including China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan will decrease. However, the gap will be partly filled by India and South East Asian countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. Currently NSW state provides 3% of total global coal consumption and 85% of NSW coal is exported mainly to Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan.
