Animals, in Their Own Right

Wildlife parks and zoos clean up their act and make life more livable for animals. Zhang Xingye, a Beijing resident, felt disappointed when park workers at the Shanghai Wildlife Sanctuary told him and his five-year-old son that they were not allowed to feed the big cats. Having made the long trip from the capital, Zhang had looked forward to throwing snacks into lion and tiger cages to show his son nature in action. However, since March 19, 2005, this has been prohibited. Once made aware by park officials of the need to protect the welfare of the animals and avoid the constant avalanche of food being thrown into the cages, Zhang understood the reason behind the regulations and said the move now needs the support of all visitors.
