Migration of Chemical Additives from Packaging Materials into Dairy Products: Safety and Regulatory Perspectives

food packaging plays an indispensable role in ensuring quality of the processed foods by not only offering containment but also provide safety against several physical, chemical and biological encounters. Globally, India is second largest food producer next to China as growth of food processing sector has virtually doubled during the last four years. This has also resulted in simultaneous growth in food packaging materials. The food packaging industry has been reported as India's fifth largest sectorwith an existing worth of nearly US $40 billion. By the end of 2020, it is also anticipated to reach over US$65 billion (FICCI, 2018). Table 1 shows the fragmentation of different types of packaging material widely used indicating the contribution of flexible plastic.
