ABS: Here's hoping that you had a Christmas season that, despite COVID-19, had a few merry moments! Our Christmas Day ended that evening with a fire truck, sirens blazing and lights flashing!Let's step back a minute....We have a small mixed farm just outside Fredericton, New Brunswick, in a place called Rusagonis (often called "the Gornish"). We have 300 acres, 60 acres cleared and the rest wooded. There's a farmhouse and a barn built in 1889 that is roughly 80 by 40 by 40 feet. It's connected to an open machine shed and a mill building. There's also a separate hooped greenhouse that's 110 by 15 feet. We have cattle, sheep, and chickens in the barn, and we grow vegetables and fruit for local sale. We had to downsize the beef herd last fall because of the low hay yield last summer, so we're at 15 head now - a mixture of Highland, Hereford, Shorthorn, and Dexter breeds.On Christmas evening, my husband went out with the grandchildren (our family bubble) to do barn work. They had to fight the wind to get out there. Although the gusts were only 50 km/hr from the southeast, this was an unusual direction for the wind to blow in this region. My husband and the kids came in about 40 minutes later and we ate supper.
