Port of Rotterdam says throughput fell 9pc

The port of Rotterdam handled a total of 322.3mn t of freight during the first nine months this year, down by 8.8pc com- pared with the same period of 2019. The drop was mainly driv- en by lower volumes of iron ore, coal, crude and oil products. Dry bulk commodities fell the most, down by 18.6pc on the year. Falling steel production in Rotterdam’s hinterland had a negative impact on iron ore and coke throughputs, while rising use of renewables and gas for electricity constrained thermal coal volumes. Higher biomass and agricultural bulk volumes mitigated the decline.
