Dynamic Modelling to Assess the Value of Electronic Data Interchange: A Study inthe Rotterdam Port Community

This dissertation addresses the issue of assessing the value of Electronic DataInterchange (EDI) for organizations in the transport sector. The EDI dilemma that faces decision makers in these organizations is described and placed in a general problem solving model. We hypothesized that it is possible to develop an inquiry system that will support decision-makers in assessing the value of alternative EDI-projects. The research started with the development of a framework for value assessment and the development of an initial version of the inquiry system. This initial system was enhanced on the basis of the experience gained in three case studies where the Layered Actors, Networks and Entities (LANE) approach was prescribed to support organizational decision makers in their struggle with the EDI dilemma. The case studies were: The transport of beer to the USA; The central gate for a stevedore; and The import of audio and video equipment from the Far East. It was concluded that the LANE-approach gives decision-makers in organizations that are involved in transport the means to assess the value of EDI in a cost-effective way. The final section discusses to what extent the results of our research are applicable outside EDI and the transport sector.
