In the drive to improve the performance of lead-acid batteries, additives, particularly carbon, are currently the focus of development. Because of this, it may be that we are overlooking an important ingredient in the race to achieve enhanced battery performance. The benefit of red lead in the positive active material of lead-acid batteries has been known for some time. Its main function has been to reduce formation times and improve initial capacities in both tubular and flat plate designs. Here, Reinhard Marx takes a fresh look at red lead as a method of improving battery production costs, active material utilisation and lifetime efficiency, to provide a product that not only performs better but can be cheaper and longer lasting.
