California levies more than $664,000 in fines for VOC violations

The California Air Resources Board has collected a total of $664,225 from six retailers this year to resolve alleged violations of the state's volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations for household products. The settlements highlight the potential costs for failing to comply with the nation's toughest VOC limits, which are due to become more restrictive in the coming years after CARB voted last month to approve tighter limits for seven product categories. Walmart will pay the lion's share of the total fines levied so far this year. CARB announced on 2 April that the retail giant agreed to pay $415,000 to settle claims it sold hair finishing sprays and windshield washer fluid products that exceeded California's concentration limits for VOCs.
