Digital technologies for the representation of building designs have become universal in the drawing office of today. How different things were when the reviewer started work in the 1960s as a technician in the architects department of a large retail corporation. Here, the drawing board reigned supreme, with a table alongside stacked high with hand-drawn sketches of proposed shop fronts, interiors and details for purpose-made display stands and other fittings. Most of the sketches were drawn on detail paper, torn off a ten-inch roll, and they formed a key part of the design process, assisting in the identification and thinking through of design problems, developing ideas and producing possible solutions.
