Benefiting communities by using plant genetic resources in some community biodiversity management areas in Indonesia

Indonesia as a mega-biodiversity country has a lot of genetic resources including tropical fruit trees. There are three important tropical fruits with many species in Indonesia such as mango, citrus and Garcinia sp. This study was conducted in the three provinces, respectively, in South Kalimantan, East Java and West Sumatra. These fruits are important due to their benefits in terms of improving nutrition, increasing incomes, creating jobs, reducing poverty and improving the regional economy. Some ofthese species are considered rare and endangered because of deforestation, illegal logging and the use of wood for construction. In addition, the community questions the valorization of these products instead of fresh consumption. This present researchhas focused on community biodiversity management (CRM) such as bringing these genetic resources from the forest, implementing the nursery to avoid the scarcity of the trees, maintaining the diversity block and field gene bank, exploring the utilization of the products, processing and marketing the genetic resources including their value added. All of these activities benefited the community. Any other activities including dissemination of the diversity as well as empowering communities and improving their capacity building were also necessary to guarantee the sustainability of the program.
