Trends of Area, Production and Productivity of Major Fruit Crops in Jammu & Kashmir

摘要

India accounts for nearly 10 per cent of world production of fruit crop with annual production of about 44 to 46 million tonnes. The production of fruit in India rose from 28.63 million tonnes in 1991-92 to 46.97 million tonnes in 1996-97 (Anonymous,2000). Despite of such high levels of production in the fruit sector, about 30 per cent of the produce get spoiled due to inadequate or improper post harvest handling, lack of processing and storage facilities and absence of linkage between the porcessorand the marketer of fruits. Because of it varies agro-climatic conditions, temperate, sub-tropical and tropical fruit can be grown in India. India can provide a wide variety of fruits. In respect of fruits, India is the largest producer of mangoes, banana and is among the first 10th position in the production of apples, papayas, orange, grape and pineapple.
