Atlantic thermal coal markets remained subdued Wednesday, as physical demand was still outweighed by supply and the approaching end-of-year period only further dampened activity. In Europe, the winter season was doing little to encourage sentiment as market sources still said stockpiles across Europe were too high to encourage much spot purchasing, or any significant price rise. “There’s still some burn but it’s not about to clean out stocks any time soon,” a European coal broker said. A second broker source said there was no activity for December cargoes, which was indicative of the general sentiment regarding spot activity through to the end of the year.
