As many readers of AFN know,I like to build wheels - big complicated wheels.Typically these large wheels require a great deal of work to be done in the field,as it is very difficult to transport them in even a partially assembled form.This article is about my attempts to find a way to do more of the work in my shop,but be able to transport the work safely and then assemble the wheel relatively quickly in the field.I first got Into building fancy wheels" in 2000,when I had the opportunity to work with Toni Busuttil of Malta when he came to this country at the invitation of the Crackerjacks Fireworks Club.One of the techniques that he used was the use of strips of tempered hardboard where conventional lancework technique would use rattan strips.This was an interesting approach to me,as hardboard Is much easier to acquire than rattan!
