Fundamental concepts to understand excitation mechanisms of electromagnetic interference (EMI) related to printed circuit boards (PCBs) are explained. These are the common-mode excitation mechanisms, modeling of an IC/LSI as a noise source, the power and ground plane resonance on a multi-layer PCB, and simulation of radiated emission excited by the resonance. The excitation mechanisms of the common mode are classified to the "Voltage-Driven", the "Current-Driven", and the "Imbalance Difference" mechanisms. The last one was proposed by the authors in a previous paper.
