Use of B. subtilis as a silage additive was investigated in Russia. Data on comparison between silage formed using no additives, 0.5% AIV-3 Plus and Biotrof preparations are tabulated. The parameters monitored were pH, ammonia, lactic, acetic and butyric acid contents, digestibility, energy and crude protein contents. A range of fodder crops with varying dry weight and sugar content were studied. The authors state that B. subtilis offers clear advantages when silaging freshly harvested crops with low sugar content as well as crops with high sugar content. Crops which traditionally are not used for silaging due to low sugar content, such as lucerne, can be preserved using B. subtilis after drying to dry content of 32-40%. The authors conclude that development of new silaging preparations based on B. subtilis will allow widening the range of crops used for silaging and minimise the use of chemical preservatives.
