The effect of solvent on production rate and hydrolysis rate of propylene oxide (PO) was studied over TS-1 catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. When methanol or water were used as the solvent, both PO production rate and hydrolysis rate were larger than those in acetonitrile or 1, 4-dioxane. The PO production rate and PO hydrolysis rate were strongly dependent upon the reaction solvent, though the solution contained water in 30 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. The relationship between reaction temperature and PO hydrolysis rate revealed that the activation energies obtained for many solvents were almost constant. This result suggests that the hydration mechanism does not change with the solvent. Furthermore, it was found that the hydration rate under small concentration of hydrogen peroxide was represented by Langmuir-Hinshelwood type mechanism. The overall reactions from propylene to propylene glycol were analyzed by first order consecutive reactions.
