Ohio was indeed a locus of innovation in the late 19th century. In addition to Charles Martin Hall's invention of a method for producing primary aluminum in commercial quantities, two brothers from Dayton were about to make aviation history-and put aluminum to use in a way that even Hall probably had not considered. Although they were not the first ones to build and fly aircraft, Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first to create aircraft controls that made fixed-wing flight possible. From the beginning of their aeronautical experimentation in 1899, the brothers- whose mechanical skills were developed in their Dayton bicycle shop- proved to be outside-the-box thinkers. Rather than focusing, as others had, on overcoming "the flying problem" by experimenting with ever-more-powerful engines, they instead sought to lighten the engine to better enable liftoff. (Their use of wind tunnels, observations and calculations on lift and drag, and focus on steering and equilibrium also set them apart from their peers.)
