A Century Later: Aluminum to the Rescue Again

More than a century after the placement of the historic lightning rod/cap atop the Washington Monument, aluminum was once again used to protect this national landmark. In 1999, aluminum scaffolding was erected so that repairs could be undertaken to the monument's masonry. Decades of weather, dirt, pollution, and other environmental conditions had left the monument in subpar condition-and many months of work would need to be undertaken to clean and restore the historic facade.
