Automakers today are driven by customers as well as environmental laws to reduce fuel consumption and make the vehicles they manufacture greener overall, while also improving safety and maintaining affordability. A consortium of steel companies, spurred on by the Automotive Applications Council of the American Iron and Steel Institute's Steel Market Development Institute and the Auto/Steel Partnership, is helping steer the automotive industry in the right direction. Efforts undertaken and success to date of the initiative combined to garner AMM's Excellence in Steel Award for Environmental Responsibility/ Stewardship.
