The U.S. secondary metals industry has regained a degree of normalcy since the scary final quarter of 2008, but industry eyes remain focused on China as the nation's demand for nonferrous scrap continues to ramp up. Aleris International Inc., the largest U.S. scrap-based aluminum alloy producer, remains in its Chapter 11 sickbed, leaving questions as to its eventual health-and weight-after it exits bankruptcy. Aleris applied for a second extension of its deadline to settle with unsecured creditors as 2009 came to a close. Some of the Beachwood, Ohio-based company's competitors are hoping that the eventual restructuring will remove Aleris' specification alloy plant in Coldwater, Mich., from the picture. They perceive that facility as an important factor in the marketplace, but one that probably doesn't turn a profit.
