For Americans with more than a casual interest in the manufacturing sector of the U.S., the summer of 2007 was spent in hopeful anticipation of the labor agreement between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and General Motors Corp.-and, ultimately, Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor Co. That the Big Three have slipped in U.S. and international importance is undeniably documented by the precipitous slide in their market share and the massive red ink they have piled up. The press and financial industries have published much about the uncom-petitive cost side, driven by the twin evils of high wages and excess employees, and the public's negative reaction to the aging models offered by the Big Three.
