The article by J. O. Quantz in the musty yellowed journal (published in 1897) was titled "Dendro-Psychoses," a combination of dendron (Greek for tree) and psychoses (a derivative of a Greek word meaning "to animate or give life to"). Quantz was discussing the roots of humankind's attraction to trees. There was nothing bizarre or pathological in this relationship, nothing to warrant the use of psychosis in its contemporary meaning of serious mental disorder. The term was being employed in a way that was unfamiliar to me.
