Application of organic electroluminescence device to the electro-optical conversion device

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the tris (8-hydroxyquinolinolato) aluminum (III) (Alq{sub}3emissive layer were fabricated on both the ITO coated glass and polyimide substrates for application on the electro-optical conversion devices. The emission characteristics of the OLED fabricated on the ITO-coated polyimide substrate are almost similar to those of an OLED fabricated on an ITO-coated glass substrate. Optical pulses of 100 MHz have been obtained from an OLED based on the rubrene doped in Alq{sub}3 emissive layer with the active area of 0.01 mm{sup}2 fabricated on the ITO-coated polyimide substrate. We demonstrated that the OLEDs could be used in the fields of optical communication as an electro-optical conversion device for transmitting moving picture signals.
