Peggy Barber: reminiscences and hopes for the future

After more than 30 years at ALA, Peggy Barber has decided to move on. She leaves behind a distinguished legacy: She was associate executive director of communications since 1984 and executive director of the Fund for America's Libraries. She created the Public Programs Office and the Public Information Office. She began at ALA in 1969 as director of the Office for Recruitment. In 1999 she was awarded ALA's Joseph W. Lippincott Award (AL, Sept., p. 80). Before Barber took off for a cross-country trip to start her retirement, AL Associate Editor Carol Kristl talked with her about her ALA experiences and the profession. AL: Was it youthful idealism that drew a California girl to cold Chicago winters and ALA in 1969? PB: I saw a notice about the job posted in the San Francisco Public Library where I worked. I interviewed with Ruth Frame and she offered me the job.
