THE consequences for Australia's cattle and other livestock industries posed by foot and mouth disease (FMD) occurring in Australia are well documented and publicised. The 2000 Industry Assistance Commission Report calculated that the cost of an outbreak in Australian would be in the order of 2 dollar-14 billion dollar, depending on the scale of the outbreak. The 2001 FMD outbreak in the United Kingdom resulted in losses of an estimated ￡3.1 billion to agriculture and the food chain.
