The present state and ways of stabilisation of pigmeat production in industrial complexes.

Industrial scale pig production in Russia underwent major expansion in the 1970s and continues to dominate the sector. However, objective factors such as high feed, energy, and transport costs mean that many production units are currently failing tofulfil their potential and output has seriously declined. Others are seeking solutions to these problems through closer integration of production and processing enterprises, on-farm feed production, and involvement of foreign partners. There is an urgent need for adequate support mechanisms and a clearly defined State development programme for the pig sector. More support is also essential for research and development within Russia, though foreign expertise is valuable. Other priorities are reduction of the environmental impact of large production units, development of energy-efficient production systems, and a breeding programme oriented towards high productivity hybrid stock and fostering close links between breeders and specialist centres. Many production units need to be re-equipped. There is considerable potential for equipment manufacturers in other CIS member countries to meet this need.
