In the course of time, forests and their utilization steadily gained importance for mankind. Woodlands initially served solely to cover an individual's elemental needs. When mining came into being, timber was then used for many other purposes and thus, systematic forestry was developed. Exploitation and timber scarcity resulted in strict regulations and mandatory reforestation. The principles of sustainability in timber utilization were increasingly prevalent.
